Our Students are Shining Stars!

The William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts will foster a safe, creative, enjoyable and culturally sensitive learning environment for all students with the goal of providing a college preparatory curriculum in both academics and the performing arts to produce the next generation of leaders for America and the Global Society.

Mission Statement

The William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts (WEDJ PCS) opened its doors for the first time to 153 PK3-5th grade students in September 2004. Located at 705 Edgewood Street NE in Ward 5, WEDJ PCS has a permanent state-of-the-art facility to best serve its mission in educating students in the District of Columbia. In February of 2005, WEDJ PCS received a charter amendment from the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board to enroll students in grades PK3 – 7th and grade 9 in September 2006. In the Spring of 2008, the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board granted another charter amendment to WEDJ PCS to open another elementary campus on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home.  That small elementary campus will grow to include grades Prek3 - 8th in Ward 4.  The NW campus is a green park-like setting and is the only federally secured campus for a Public Charter Day School in the District of Columbia.  WEDJ PCS now serves 655 students in grades PK3 – 12 on two campuses.  The first 12th grade class will graduate in June 2010!

WEDJ PCS is a co-educational day school that provides both a college-preparatory, standards based curriculum as well as professional-grade artistic instruction and practice in various forms including: visual, performing, written and physical as they relate to and support the performing arts of Theater, Movement and Music. All students are required to participate in a rotating 6-day school week enabling full instruction in both art and academia. All students are required to participate in at least one public exhibition or performance per year – depending on grade of student.  Additional Saturday Academies are available for students to prepare for standardized tests each year.

WEDJ PCS has partnered with DC-CAP to offer our high school students a comprehensive college preparation program - including overnight college tours.   WEDJ PCS is an ETS testing site and offers college entrance examinations at no cost to students.  Students in all grades engage in "College Talk" and grades are organized by their year of graduation.  Every graduating student will have an acadmic placement for the following fall prior to completing their senior year.

WEDJ PCS is fully Accredited by the American Academy for Liberal Education.
