Special Education Teacher (English Language Learners)

Job Summary

To guide English Language Learners toward gaining knowledge and skills in order to become productive citizens by increasing English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop individualized annual academic plans that correlate with identified weaknesses and grade-level standards.
  2. Using the WIDA-APT screening tool, test all students based on the Home Language Surveys who have a second language spoken at home in order to determine if they meet the criteria for ELL services.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of students.
  4. Document service provision and student progress on daily progress notes.
  5. Organize meaningful sequences of learning activities within a well-defined structure (e.g. long-term plans, unit plans, thematic activities, lesson plans).
  6. Provide differentiated instruction through content, process and manipulatives to address each ELL student’s need.
  7. Link content between different subject areas.
  8. Organize a variety of support materials to enhance learning (e.g. software, websites, audio-visuals)
  9. Expose students to skills and ideas that are relevant for life-long learning.
  10. Address practical connections to career-related professions.
  11. Employ high level thinking (reflecting/theorizing) assessment.
  12. Emphasize the habits and roles of researchers.
  13. Show evidence of short- and long-term goals in planning.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of teaching.
  • Considerable knowledge of the texts, materials, supplies and equipment necessary in carrying out educational or recreational programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends and sources of information in the field of education.
  • Ability to evaluate critically the educational achievements of students and to give assignments according to their interests and ability.
  • Ability to prepare lesson plans and organize a meaningful instructional program.
  • Ability to interpret the results of tests.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred).
  • Possesses or is eligible for a valid District of Columbia Teaching License.

Special Education Teacher

Job Summary

The special education teacher is a professional educator teaching academic courses and providing additional services to students who have qualified for special education. Under direction of the special education coordinator, the special education teacher will provide quality services to students in kindergarten through eighth grade in either resource or inclusion settings. The special education teacher must demonstrate a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programs including special instruction, tutorial assistance, and consultation with general education staff.

The special education teacher will

  • Assist with program development to meet the unique needs of the school
  • Plan pilot programs that contribute to the improvement of school-wide policies
  • Advocate on behalf of students and families
  • Provide direct services to special education students

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teach classes at the preschool, primary, elementary or secondary level within a specific area of special education in alignment with the WEDJ curriculum.
  2. Teach inquiry-based programs as part of enrichment programming
  3. Prepare, adapt, and deliver instructional material
  4. Develop suitable curricula and effective teaching methods based on assessment of students’ needs
  5. Evaluate students’ academic and behavioral progress
  6. Supervise students in classrooms and school building
  7. Develop educational plans for individual students
  8. Teach desirable study, work, and recreational habits by providing students with opportunities for which they are best suited
  9. Create and maintain student records for identified students
  10. Select appropriate texts, learning aids, materials, and supplies
  11. Participate in teacher training as required
  12. Plan and participate in extracurricular student and staff activities
  13. Maintain records and prepare case reports and correspondence related to the work

Teacher Position: Inquiry and Technology Project Coordinator

Job Summary

The William E Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts is currently looking for an educator interested in leading an innovative inquiry project that involves taking a lead role in technology education, inquiry and classroom science instruction. This highly qualified individual will be responsible for conducting Wonder Workshops for Pre-K to second grade, as well as teach science and inquiry to students in third through eighth grade. The Inquiry and Technology Project Coordinator will also develop a long-term educative technology plan for the school.

LICSW/Social Worker and Teacher

Job Summary: The social worker shall have the primary responsibility for providing services to students with special needs and the general education student population. The social worker is involved in preventive work with students, staff, and families that promotes positive school climate and social and emotional well-being.  He or she will be responsible for implementing classroom and community educational programs, assessing problems, determining appropriate types of counseling service methods, and implementing intervention methodologies. The social worker also serves as liaison between the school and the DC Child and Family Services Agency and functions in such areas as counseling, protective services, and family services.

Specifically, the social worker will

  • Assist with program development to meet the unique needs of the school
  • Plan programs and contribute to the development and improvement of school-wide policies
  • Advocate on behalf of students and families
  • Provide direct services to students and facilitate special education
  • Assist in planning, arranging, and implementing of psychosocial programs for students
  • Create educational and counseling programs for both individual students and groups of students
  • Serve as liaison to community support groups as appropriate
  • Teach classes about personal and social development, life skills, community service, testing preparation, and health education.
  • Plan, implement, and assess parent education programs

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide consultation to school staff and parents to facilitate students’ educational, social, and emotional growth
  • Conduct home visits that encourage home/school communication
  • Provide in-service presentations to staff as needed or required
  • Lead the Student Support Team (SST) collaborative to develop plans of assistance for students at risk of academic or behavioral difficulty
  • Coordinate school and community services
  • Perform short-term counseling and crisis intervention as necessary
  • Facilitate special support groups focused on, for example, students with incarcerated parents, grief and loss, divorce, conflict resolution, etc. as needed
  • Manage family resource centers, where parents and guardians can access needed information and participate in opportunities to learn how to support their students
  • Serve as a member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT)
  • Coordinate the design and implementation of behavior intervention plans and functional behavior plans
  • Provide related services as prescribed by Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), including social skills, life skills, and transitional skills that can be transferred from school to community
  • Participate in MDT, IEP, manifestation determination, and other related meetings
  • Work collaboratively within the classroom setting (as needed) to implement student IEPs
  • Collect data for the purpose of monitoring social/emotional progress and evaluating effectiveness of services
  • Provide technical assistance on strategies that improve outcomes for special education students.
  • Maintain weekly tracking records of student receiving services
  • Complete quarterly progress reports of each student in caseload
  • Teach a PAL (Promoters of Arts and Leadership) class and other classes as needed
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the dean of special education or other school administrators

Qualifications

  • Master of Social Work degree (MSW)
  • District of Columbia Certification as a School Social Worker, which must be maintained throughout employment with DC Public Schools
  • At least three years of work experience as a social worker in an urban school or setting with a track record of high student achievement
  • Ability to conduct clinical interviews and write comprehensive social history evaluations
  • Ability to administer, interpret, and analyze related assessment instruments
  • Teaching degree or certification desired, but not necessary

William E. Doar Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts (WEDJPCS), a unique public charter school in Northeast Washington, DC that serves more than 430 students in grades PreK to 8, is seeking dynamic and committed educators for a range of teaching positions across subjects and grade levels (PreK through middle school) for the 2012-13 school year.
